 I’m at day two of the Advanced Research Methodology course, led by Thomas W. Jones, in Pittsburgh!! So happy to be here! I’m blogging abou the week at A Well Lit Path. In preparation, I spent a few days digging through boxes, dusty bookshelves, and dark closets, on a quest to find every begun-then-abandoned journal I own, and there are a LOT….. but, back to the point, tucked inside an old, cast-off (about 75% abandoned ) journal, was a folded bit of teal paper covered in my handwriting. It was dated June 22, 1996 and began with: “stories from Aunty Helen and Aunty Jeannette…” I have to say, I have absolutely no memory of this particular conversation with two of my Great Aunts (siblings in my Grandfather’s family of 14 children), and no recollection of having ever heard these stories. And for that, I’m grateful beyond belief that June 1996 was among the few, brief periods when I was (…more)  Wordless Wednesday is a daily blogging prompt sponsored by Geneabloggers Feeling a little listless, lost, and ungrounded tonight. I spend so much time with the dead…poring through the past, trying to reconstruct lives from sometimes nothing more than scraps of barely legible paper…wondering who they were and what they would have wished people could know about them now. I am so lucky to have had all four of my grandparents in my life for as long as they were. I was so loved. But, I wish I’d asked them more questions. Not about facts and dates, but rather about their thoughts and the memories of all the little moments in their lives which they would have wanted me to keep safe in my memory for them. I really want to get it right……Know what I mean? I’m not sure I’m explaining myself, but I want to post their picture before it’s Thursday. I hope (…more)  Yikes! A reader alerted me to the fact that today is my (woefully neglected) blog’s 2nd anniversary! Lots of exciting things have been happening lately in my genealogical world, but unfortunately they’ve drawn me away from my beloved Mahoganybox… A few of the things…..  I think I read somewhere that I’m not supposed to do this; that it’s hard enough to stay on top of one blog, let alone three. But here’s my logic…. Mahoganybox.net was created as a tribute to my grandparents and as a means of sharing their family trees and my adventures in researching my British roots from the comfort of my armchair in the United States. Sometimes I talk in general terms the other side of my tree, but I prefer to keep the focus on England. Still, I’ve amassed a wealth of info on my father’s side of the family and I am dying to share it and strike up some conversations with others who might be researching some of my French-Canadian lines. I woke this morning to the very nice news that I’d received a Lovely Blog Award from Alex over at Winging It Thanks so much Alex!! The genealogy blogging world has been so welcoming! Although I’ve been researching my family history for 30+ years, it’s always been something of a solitary venture. What a pleasure to find a community of fellow addicts!! The creativity and talent of geneabloggers never ceases to amaze me. Although I rely on my reader to keep up to date with posts, I still try to sit down for a bit every day to peruse my favorite pages while sipping a cup of coffee.
