I’d like to introduce…

Edward George "Ted" Turner

Edward George Turner, known affectionately to his family and friends as Ted, was a kind hearted, gregarious, right jolly English gent, loved by all who knew him. He was born on the 27th of June 1911 at Blake Cottage, Horn Street in Winslow, Buckinghamshire, where his father was employed as head groom to Mr Gosling of Blake House.

Surname Saturday: The Collcutts of Oxford - a new series

Collcutts have lived in and around Oxford for hundreds of years and are among the first names recorded in parish registers throughout the city in the early 1600s, when it became common practice for established churches to keep a written record of ecclesiastical events.

Among the Collcuts from whom I’m descended, were gentlemen farmers, glovers, carriage makers, and innkeepers. They were a family filled with interesting characters and lots of mysteries; some of the most puzzling of any I’ve come across in my personal research. To begin my series on the Collcutts, here is a genealogical sketch of the family based on my research to date.

First Generation

1. Samuel COLLCUTT [1] came from Berkshire county and was probably born around 1660. Samuel lived in Berkshire in 1704. He died on 11 Jun 1729 in St Aldates.[2]

There are hints in the parish register that suggest Samuel’s wife was named Mary, but no real proof. If Mary was Samuel’s wife, she died on 17 Jun 1727 in St Aldates.[3]

Samuel COLLCUTT and Mary_____ had the following children:

2       i. John COLLCUTT the Elder, born 1 May 1688, St Aldates,[4]; married Elizabeth AYRES, 10 Nov 1711, Oxford.
ii. Mary COLLCUTT was baptized at St Aldates on 18 May 1692. [5] She died on 30 Sep 1704 at the age of 12 in St Aldates. [6]

Second Generation

2. John COLLCUTT the Elder (Samuel-1) was baptized at St Aldates on 1 May 1688. [7]

John and Elizabeth AYRES were married by license on 10 Nov 1711 at All Saints Church in Oxford, Oxon. [8] Elizabeth AYRES, daughter of John AYRES, was baptized on 30 Aug 1685 at All Saints Church. [9]

John COLLCUTT and Elizabeth AYRES had the following children:

         i. Mary COLLCUTT was baptized on 1 Jan 1712/3 at All Saints Church. [10] She only lived a few months and was buried at All Saints Church on 12 May 1713. [11]
ii. Mary COLLCUTT was baptized at St Aldates on 20 Jun 1714. [12] She died on 4 Feb 1717 at the age of 2 in St Aldates. [13]
3      iii. John COLLCUTT the Younger, baptized 29 Nov 1716, St Thomas, Oxford; married Sarah _____ ; died 6 Mar 1803, St Aldates.
iv. Samuel COLLCUTT was baptized on 5 Jan 1719 at All Saints Church. [14]
4      v. Joseph COLLCUTT, born 1 Oct 1725, Oxford; married Elizabeth HASELY, 24 Mar 1747, St Thomas, Oxford.

Third Generation

3. John COLLCUTT the Younger (John-2, Samuel-1) was baptized at St Thomas on 29 Nov 1716. [15] On 26 Apr 1743 he was a barber, with the designation of privilegiatus at Oxford University in Oxford, Oxon. We also know from his will that he was a grazier, a term used in the 18th century to mean a person who pastures and raises cattle. [16] He died at the age of 86 and was buried on 6 Mar 1803 in St Aldates.[17] His estate was probated 5 months later on 30 Aug 1803 in St Aldates. His daughter Sarah was the sole executrix, and he left everything to her and his older daughter Mary, who was by then married.[18]

John married a woman named Sarah some time before 1742, although their marriage doesn’t appear to have taken place in St Aldates. Without a marriage record, we don’t know Sarah’s last name or where she was from. It’s been suggested that she was a Godfrey. She died on 15 Mar 1789 in St Aldates.[19]

John COLLCUTT and Sarah _____ had the following children:

5      i. William COLLCUTT, born 1742; married Sarah ; died 22 May 1814, St Aldates.
6      ii. Mary COLLCUTT, baptized 27 Oct 1743, St Aldates; married Daniel BASLEY, 10 Jun 1773, St Peter of the East, Oxford; died 3 Mar 1829, Horspath, Oxfordshire.
7     iii. John COLLCUTT of Horsepath, baptized 31 Mar 1746, St Aldates; married Ann LEWIS, 17 Jan 1769, St Aldates; was buried on 11 Dec 1826, St Aldates.
8     iv. James COLLCUTT, born ca 1751; married Mary EATON, 2 May 1773, Newington, Berkshire; died 28 Dec 1802, St Aldates.
       v. Sarah COLLCUTT was baptized on 26 Sep 1750 at St Aldates. [20]She signed a will on 3 Dec 1835 in St Aldates, leaving an enormous estate of 18,000 pounds, primarily to her nieces and nephews, children of her late brother James . [21] She died on 17 Apr 1838 at the age of 87 in St Aldates. [22] She never married.[23]

4.Joseph COLLCUTT (John-2, Samuel-1) was baptized on 1 Oct 1725 at All Saints Church. He married Elizabeth HASELY on 24 March 1747 at St Thomas Church.[24]

Joseph and Elizabeth HASELY were married on 24 Mar 1747 in St Thomas, Oxon. [25] No birth or death records have been located for Elizabeth HASELY.

Joseph COLLCUTT and Elizabeth HASELY had the following child:

        i. Elizabeth COLLCUTT was baptized at St Aldates on 15 Jul 1750.

Fourth Generation

5. William COLLCUTT (John-3, John-2, Samuel-1) was born ca1742. In 1808 he was a coal merchant in St Aldates, Oxon.[26] He signed a will on 15 Feb 1808 in St Aldates. [27] He died on 22 May 1814 at the age of 72 in St Aldates. [28] He had his estate probated on 2 Jun 1814 in London, Middlesex. [29]

William and Sarah were married, no issue. She died on 21 Feb 1811 in St Aldates.

6. Mary COLLCUTT (John-3, John-2, Samuel-1) was born on 27 Oct 1743 in St Aldates, Oxford, Oxfordshire. She married a broker named Daniel Basely and they lived in London. [30] She died on 3 Mar 1829 at the age of 85 in Horspath.

Daniel and Mary COLLCUTT were married on 10 Jun 1773 at  Daniel’s parish. She was from St Aldates parish in St Peter of the East, Oxford. [31] He died he was buried in Horspath on 25 Mar 1834. [32] He was an at various times a grocer and an auctineer in Oxford City.

Daniel BASLEY and Mary COLLCUTT had the following children:

        i. Ann BASLEY was born ca1781. She died after 1841 at the age of 60.
9      ii. Mary Godfrey BASLEY, born 1774; married Charles TALMAGE, 22 Sep 1818, Horspath, Oxfordshire; died 7 Dec 1863, Horspath, Oxfordshire.
10    iii. Daniel BASLEY, born 1780; died 5 Oct 1868, Cowley, Oxfordshire.

7. John COLLCUTT of Horsepath (John-3, John-2, Samuel-1), was baptized on 31 Mar 1746 in St Aldates. [33] John lived in St John, Oxford. He purchased the Magpie Inn, formerly owned by the late Mr. Barrett, on 17 May 1770 in Oxford.[34] He was the keeper of the inn during the 1770s.[35] Toward the end of his life he was a farmer and a gentleman.[36]  He signed a will on 3 Nov 1825 in Horspath. He left money to, among others, his niece Sarah Collins, wife of John, and their sons James William, Charles, and Edward. The bulk of his estate went to the wife and children of his deceased brother James. He left a substantial amount of money to his servant Mary Buckingham and went to great lengths to ensure that she was cared for during her lifetime. And he left a house, a stable, and farmland in Horspath to his servant Samuel Harris. The total value of all his cash and stock bequests exceeded 12,000 pounds. [37] He died on 11 Dec 1826 in Horsepath, and was buried at the age of 80 in St Aldates.[38]  His will was proved on 1 Feb 1827 in London.[39]

John and Ann LEWIS were married on 17 Jan 1769 at by license in St Aldates, Oxon. Ann died on 7 Oct 1791 in St Aldates. This marriage doesn’t appear to have produced children.

8. James COLLCUTT (John-3, John-2, Samuel-1), Sarah’s father, was probably born in the Oxford area circa 1751; however, his baptismal record hasn’t been found yet. The Collcutts were a well off family, and James, along with his father and grandfather, was considered a Gentleman. His sister Sarah never married and left an enormous estate when she died in 1838, with a large portion of it going to James’s surviving children.[40] In 1802 he was a carrier in Oxford, in charge of the Southampton run, probably based at his brother’s inn.[41] He died on 28 Dec 1802 at the age of 51 in St Aldates.[42]

James and Mary EATON were married on 2 May 1773 in Newington, Berkshire.[43] Mary EATON, daughter of Stephen EATON and Elizabeth EVETS, was born in St Aldates and baptized on 14 Sep 1751. Of the 14 children Mary gave birth to, only seven are known to have reached adulthood. Following her husband’s death, she took over his business.[44] She signed a will on 8 Jan 1822 in St Aldates, naming her son-in-law James Giles as executor, and leaving inheritences to all her surviving children. She held a mortgage on her son William’s property in St Aldates. She left money to her sons and left her household furniture and other contents to her daughter Sarah.[45] She died on 2 Jul 1828 at the age of 76 in St Aldates.[46]

James COLLCUTT and Mary EATON had the following children:

         i. James COLLCUTT was baptized at Hollywell on 20 Jun 1774.[47] He died less than a year later and was buried on 14 May 1775 in St Aldates.[48]
11     ii. Elizabeth COLLCUTT, baptized 10 Mar 1776, St Aldates; married William FORSTER, 6 Jan 1794, St Aldates; died 14 Mar 1855, St Aldates.
iii. John COLLCUTT was born in St Aldates on 27 Dec 1776 and baptized on 18 March 1777. He died at the age of 2 of smallpox, during a terrible epidemic in Oxford, and was buried on 18 Mar 1779 in St Aldates.[50]
12    iv. Mary COLLCUTT, baptized 7 Mar 1778, St Aldates; married James GILES, 14 May 1800, St Aldates;[51] died bef 1826.
        v. James COLLCUTT was baptized at St Aldates on 10 Sep 1779.[52] He lived only a few months and was buried there on 25 Feb 1780.[53]

I was able to find him on several Oxford censuses, where he appeared living on St Aldates Street with Elizabeth, and was victualler of The Plough, a pub/inn on the east side of the same Street.
viii. John Henry COLLCUTT was baptized at St Aldates on 4 Aug 1784.[55] He died from apoplexy caused by a sun stroke on 6 Jul 1848 at the age of 63 in St Aldates.[56] He went by “Henry”. He was a laborer.[57]

I’m a currently ‘unrooted’ Oxford Collcutt. My greatgrandparents were Joseph James & Alicia – has anyone any idea whether/how they link with the rest of the clan?

    • Claire

      Hi Simon,

I don’t have that couple in my database, but I haven’t followed every line in this family, so there could well be a connection. I just took a look on Ancestry.com and see potential birth and marriage records at the GRO for him, which could hold promising clues. I’m wondering if he’s William and Ann’s son…

  • Simon Collcutt

    Dear Claire,

Thank you for replying so quickly! There has always been a ‘story’ in our branch that JJ was the brother of Thomas Edward Collcutt (architect – I inherited some of his original drawings), he being said to be the son of James & Emma … RIBA certainly thinks Bertie Hawkins Collcutt (son of JJ and thus my greatuncle) was the nephew of TEC. Could this James have been the nephew of Sarah Collcutt (d. 1838)? Too many Collcutts!

    All the best,

    Simon

      Hi Simon,

I’ve done a bit more research and I now see how Joseph James fits into the scheme of things!! I will post this in a blog article tonight :-)

      Dear Simon Collcutt,

I am writing a biography of the architect Thomas Edward Collcutt(1840-1924) so I am very interested in your family connection and your mention of having some of Collcutt’s drawings. Can you tell me anything about the family and early life of Thomas? I would love to see the drawings!

      Best Wishes,

      Martin O’Rourke

Thank you, Claire. Your blog article makes the link I needed – no longer “Rootless of Oxford”!

    • Claire

Glad I could help! Now….if we could just put our heads together and figure out where Miss Sarah Collcutt got all her money!!!!!!

  • Simon Collcutt

    Dear Claire,

Sarah seems to have inherited from her father, so it is his (and his father’s) dealings which need research. Also something from her brother, William?

By the way, you have the wrong “Plough Inn” for William (14). The one you want was at 23 St. Aldate’s Street. William Collcutt (of St. Aldate’s) was listed at the Plough in Pigot’s 1830 Directory, and in 1846 in Hunt & Co’s Directory. The 1851 census has “Collcutts Yard” (including the house of William COLLCUTT) next to a public house (then occupied by John SMITH), probably the Plough, on the east side of St. Aldate’s; on the 1878 Oxford Town Plan (1:500), the inn is still present but the yard is labeled as “Plough Yard”. This establishment should not be confused with the Plough Inn (38 Cornmarket), which stood on the corner of Cornmarket and St. Michael Streets (since 1936 occupied by ‘Austin Reed’). Much of the east side of St. Aldate’s Street, including the Plough site and surroundings, is now occupied by St. Aldate’s Police Station (originally built during the period 1914-22).

    All the best,

    Simon

    • Claire

      Hi Simon,

I agree, the mystery lies in where Sarah’s father John got the money. A barber for the University in 1743, by his death he was a grazier with enough assets to warrant a will. I don’t think he inherited anything from his father, although maybe I just haven’t come across his probate records yet. I would really love to find John’s marriage to Sarah(mother) because it’s possible she brought wealth into the family. Any thoughts on that?

I don’t know how I messed up so badly with WIlliam’s Inn. I have Collcutt Yard in my notes, including that it was on the east side of St Aldates…..I guess I got a little over zealous on my trip last June! There is a Henry Taunt photo of that side of St Aldates before it was demolished in 1893, and it makes sense that Collcutt Yard would be close to Blue Boar Street, because I also have in my notes that one of the Collcutts ran the Blue Boar Inn for a time.

Thanks for pointing out the mistake!!!!

Haven’t you got the ‘Ellen’ (daughter) and ‘Emma’ (mother) turned around?

      Best wishes,

      Simon

Good grief!! Thanks for pointing that out!!!! Just goes to show, one should NOT post things while away at a super busy conference, exhausted, after having a couple of glasses of wine!

Claire – interested in Rev Daniel Basley and am grateful for your big blog which answers a good many questions. Can I add in his defence that although no doubt John Collcutt was entirely correct when he described Rev Dan as “unfortunately now insane” when making his will in 1826, Dan B had been curate at St Mary’s Luton and was listed in the 1830 Pigot as running a boys’ school in Luton (his wife Sarah Hewit ran the girls’ school at the same address), moved to Welwyn and later was Rector at Cranford St Peters in Northants. He retired to Oxford where he died in 1868. I am interested in his first wife Sarah Hewitt (not the one you mention as having married a Collcutt connection at Woodstock in 1855 but a possible descendant)as I have a portrait of her father labelled only “Hewitt”. Their daughter Sarah Sophia married a young doctor John Butcher and was my great great grandmother. I have an oil portrait of Rev Daniel and a few of his own watercolours. Sarah Hewitt died in 1838 and Basley married Ann Maria Hill in 1839. She outlived her husband and died at Observatory Street. I look forward to locating Rev Dan’s father in London.

      Hi Brian,

I’m glad you found my blog! I find my Oxford ancestors fascinating, particularly the Collcutt and Collins families. I’m eternally grateful that they were very concerned with having their estates in order – such a wealth of information in their wills. The Reverend Basely is interesting. I’ve often wondered if his insanity might have had something to do with a change in his faith, rather than a mental illness…I’m sure somewhere there is a doctor’s account of it. I’d love to see his watercolors!! Unfortunately I can’t help you at all with Sarah Hewitt. But take a look around my site, and if there’s anything you have questions about, or any errors that stand out, please let me know :-)

      Good luck!
      Claire

Hi Clair, I really enjoyed reading your article on Surname Saturday, ‘The Collcutt’s of Oxford’ and this may have solved a mystery in my Family tree! For some time I have been trying to find the Parents of a Samuel Forster, born 1843/4,St Aldates, Oxford. He first appears on the 1851 census, aged 8,living at Johnsons Buildings, St Aldates, his parents being, William & Louisa Forster, William being born around 1796,St Mary,(Stable Keeper),although the surname on this census reads Foster. Some of the other census’s read either ‘Forster or Foster’ a common mistake which still happens to this day!! I have not been able to find any Baptism records for Samuel or his siblings who were all born in the area of Oxford City, neither the Marriage record for William & Louisa. BUT, then I came across your article and in it reads that ‘Elizabeth Collcutt’ married a William Forster, St Aldates, 06-01-1794. I then read the will of Mary Collcutt, Nee Eaton, which states the her daughter Elizabeth’s husband, William, was a Livery stable keeper. Having digested this info, I realised that this may be the father of the William I have been looking for? I don’t suppose you have any other information on this William Forster, (Elizabeth’s husband). I then came across an article @ St Sepulchres.org.uk about a Charles Foster who is buried there. In it is mentioned a William Foster married to an Elizabeth Collcutt, the marriage date being 05/01/1794, St Aldates. This is one day previous to the date in your article? Should I be wise to think there is a connection here! I have copied part of the extract for you,

Charles Foster was born in Bucknell, Oxfordshire on 11 April 1779 and baptised there on 12 September. He was the son of William Foster, a yeoman of Bucknell, and Sarah Eagles of Bicester, who were married at Bicester Church on 28 April 1767. Nine of his siblings were also baptised at that church: John (1768), Sarah Eagles (1769), Thomas (1771), William (1772), Michael (1775), Elizabeth (1777), Eleanor (1781), Mary (1784), and Rebecca (1786).

His father died in 1792, leaving Charles £250 in his will, plus £50 to pay for his apprenticeship. On 1 December 1793 he was duly apprenticed for seven years to Richard Cox, a mercer at 134 High Street in All Saints’ parish. His older brother William Foster was living nearby in St Mary-the-Virgin parish on 5 January 1794, when he married Elizabeth Collcutt of St Aldate’s at her parish church; but he appears to have returned to Bucknell to farm.

The question I would like to ask is, do you think these are the same people?? I would be enormously grateful for your advise on this and maybe as to how I can find the Parish records for their Baptism’s and marriages. Thank you.

Always nice to revisit my Collcuts! I can look through my research over the weekend and let you know if I have anything that might be of use for you.

Just found this as I have been researching my family tree. I had got as far as William Collcutt born 1782, who was my 3rd great grandfather!
Thank you so much! I have a photo of him if you would be interested.
